No wedding date has been set but Angelina is proudly wearing in her left finger the “dazzling diamond” ring which is, according to wild guesses, 10 carats and worth $1 million. The question (aside from the wedding date) of the hour is who will design Angelina’s wedding gown and how it will look. A story in the latest issue of People magazine included the sketches of two A-list designers (not exactly the ones who would be chosen by Angelina to do it), one of them Hollywood-based Filipina Monique Lhuillier. Shown here is Monique’s sketch as published by People mag, described as “a Chantilly lace gown with a beautiful V-neckline, low back and a high slit.” Monique Lhuillier was quoted as saying, “Angie has style. She takes a classic look and adds a sultry, sexy edge and makes it her own.”

Mamodupi Mohlala snubbed a Vera Wang wedding gown – choosing instead to walk down the aisle in a dress she found in Rosebank.

While many women around the world can only dream of wearing a dress by the highly sought-after international designer on their big day, Mohlala said: “The dresses were too quiet … Vera Wang is definitely not for black girls. I wanted lots of bling-bling.”

The head of the National Consumer Commission tied the knot with businessman Lawrence Mulaudzi at Sun City’s Palace of the Lost City yesterday afternoon at an intimate ceremony with 200 guests, including businessman Sello Rasithaba and his wife, Ouma, who worked with Mohlala when she started out as a young attorney in Pretoria in 1998.

Other guests included defence secretary Dr Sam Gulube and his wife, Lillian More.

Earlier, Mohlala said she had initially wanted a Wang dress.

” I went to look at Vera Wang’s collection overseas, but I was not impressed.”

Instead, she said, she “fell in love” with a dress at a boutique in Rosebank, Johannesburg. “I am glad I supported a local, black, female entrepreneur. We must live what we preach.”

Mohlala’s traditional white dress was a chiffon-wrapped ballgown trimmed with lace at the bottom, with a sequined and crystal bodice. Her dress had a cathedral train, while her veil was trimmed with lace and Swarovski crystals.

The couple invited only their closest friends and family, with the wedding invite telling guests to bring a “sense of humour and dance shoes”.

Said Mohlala: “We wanted to be real … that’s why we only invited people we have known since primary school and varsity, and from our professions.”

She walked down the aisle with her mother, Nomaswazi Mohlala, while her 12-year-old niece, Thando Mohlala, served as her maid of honour. Two of her four bridesmaids were dressed in gold and two in blue.

A beaming Mulaudzi, who could not keep his eyes off his bride, was smart in a blue suit.

The bouquets featured the national flower, the protea, while a local violin band entertained guests .

The garden ceremony was conducted by Reverend Mandla Gamede.

Chairs were covered in white cloth and decorated in turquoise and gold.

A cream carpet scattered with red, orange and yellow rose petals lay in the aisle, with glass tube vases and cream flowers on either side.

The couple exchanged Cartier wedding bands. Mohlala’s 1.5-carat diamond and platinum engagement ring was also from the famous jeweller. Said Mohlala: “Lawrence’s ring was tailor-made. I wanted it to have a black diamond because he is a strong man.”

The bride was greeted withululations and, in her usual bubbly manner, she scanned the crowd for familiar faces, giggling.

The master of ceremonies was comedian Shonisani Muleya, better known as Ashifashabba from Capricorn FM and an old friend of Mulaudzi.

The menu comprised pap, rice, chicken, fish and beef, while the six-tiered gold cake comprised red velvet, fruit cake and chocolate flavours.

The newlyweds walked into their reception to Brenda Fassie’s It’s a Wedding Day, and their first dance as husband and wife was to John Legend’s I’ll Stay with You.

For the after-party, guests changed and headed to the Valley of the Waves for a Moroccan-themed affair and a braai.

The couple will honeymoon in Spain in May.

For over a decade, the issue of same-sex marriage has been a flashpoint in American politics, setting off waves of competing legislation, lawsuits and ballot initiatives to either legalize or ban the practice and causing rifts within religious groups. The legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States has become a relatively recent goal of the gay-rights movement, but over the last few years, gay-rights organizers have placed it at the center of their agenda, steering money and muscle into dozens of state capitals in an often uphill effort to persuade lawmakers.

Proponents of same-sex marriage have long argued that the institution of marriage is a unique expression of love and commitment and that calling the unions of same-sex couples anything else is a form of second-class citizenship; they also point out that many legal rights are tied to marriage. Those opposed to same-sex marriage agree that marriage is a fundamental bond with ancient roots. But they draw the opposite conclusion, saying that allowing same-sex couples to marry would undermine the institution of marriage itself.

Most states have shown caution in changing the status quo. But Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. And in June 2011, New York lawmakers voted to legalizesame-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples are able to wed and giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born. Days later, the Rhode Island State Senate approved a bill allowing civil unions, despite fierce opposition from gay rights advocates who called the legislation discriminatory.

Beyond symbolism, gay-rights advocates said that New York hadprovided them with a new political model. The movement’s success in New York and other places could prove difficult to replicate. Twenty-nine states have constitutional bans on same-sex marriage, while 12 others have laws against it. Gay-rights groups are likely to seek ballot initiatives in 2012 to overturn bans on same-sex marriage in Maine, where the Legislature approved a same-sex marriage law in 2009 that voters almost immediately turned back, and in Oregon.

A California court in 2008 ruled that a law barring same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. In a referendum that November, a ballot measure known as Proposition 8 was passed that restored the ban. Proposition 8 withstood a challenge in the state Supreme Court, which upheld the ban while allowing the marriages performed before it took effect to stand. But in August 2010, a federal judge found it unconstitutional, in a ruling that both sides say will end up before the Supreme Court. The ban ceased to have effect on Aug. 18, 2010.

In February 2011, President Obama, in a major legal policy shift, directed the Justice Department to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act — the 1996 law that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages — against lawsuits challenging it as unconstitutional.

Legally, there is still a long way to go before the issue is settled. Mr. Obama’s decision has generated only mild rebukes from the Republicans hoping to succeed him in 2012, but House Republicans made plans to intervene, possibly by seeking to have Congress made a party to the suit.

Running Battles: Political and Legal

The issue of same-sex marriage came to the fore after the Supreme Court of Hawaii ruled in 1993 that the denial of marriage licenses to three homosexual couples amounted to unconstitutional discrimination on the basis of sex — not sexual orientation — unless the state could show a compelling reason for the denials.

The Hawaii Legislature passed a bill in 1994 affirming marriage as intended for “man-woman units” capable of procreation. But in 1996, conservatives, fearful that the court case would lead to the sanctioning of marriages of lesbian and gay couples in Hawaii by the end of 1997, campaigned across the nation to insure that the recognition of same-sex marriages would not spread to other states.

The legislative battle picked up momentum as more conservatives became convinced a federal law was required. In September 1996, the United States Congress, approving what was called the “Defense of Marriage Act,” voted overwhelmingly to deny Federal benefits to married people of the same sex and to permit states to ignore such marriages sanctioned in other states. The bill was signed by President Bill Clinton.

In 1998, Hawaii voters rejected the legalization of same-sex marriages.

Same-sex marriage first became a reality in the United States in 2004, after the Supreme Court in Massachusetts ruled that it was required under the equal protection clause of the state’s Constitution. Connecticut began allowing same-sex marriage in late 2008.

In April 2009, Iowa’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of allowing gay couples to marry, and the legislatures of Maine and Vermont passed laws granting the same right in the following weeks. In California, after a court decision in 2008 allowed the marriages, a voter referendum that November, upheld in court in May 2009, barred them.

The New Hampshire legislature approved revisions to a same-sex marriage bill on June 3, 2009, and Gov. John Lynch promptly signed the legislation, making the state the sixth to let gay couples wed and changing the landscape surrounding an issue that brings together deeply held principles and flashpoint politics.

Civil unions, an intermediate step that supporters say has made same-sex marriage seem less threatening, are legal in New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont. The latter two states are phasing them out after adopting same-sex marriage laws.

New England

New England remains the nucleus of the same-sex marriage movement, with a campaign under way to extend marriage rights to gay men and lesbians in all six of the region’s states by 2012.

Critics say the success of the movement in New England is largely because courts and legislatures, not voters, are making the decisions. Voters have approved constitutional bans on same-sex marriage in 26 states since the Massachusetts court ruling, a landmark, took effect; the constitutions of four other states also limit marriage to heterosexuals.

Gay rights supporters suffered a crushing loss when voters decided in November 2009 to repeal Maine’s new law allowing gay men and lesbians to wed, setting back a movement that had made remarkable progress nationally over the course of the year.

Maine, with its libertarian leanings, had seemed to offer an excellent chance of reversing the national trend of voters rejecting marriage equality at the ballot box. Instead, it became the 31st state to block same-sex marriage through a public referendum.

In July 2010, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional, finding that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples.

California

Another major front in the debate is California. On May 15, 2008, the Supreme Court of California voted 4-to-3 that a state law banning same-sex marriage constituted illegal discrimination because domestic partnerships were not a good enough substitute. In its decision, the court wrote that whatever term is used by the state must be granted to all couples who meet its requirements, whatever their gender. The court left open the possibility that another term could denote state-sanctioned unions so long as that term was used across the board.

Opponents quickly organized, and launched the Proposition 8 initiative campaign, asking voters to ban same-sex marriages. After an expensive and hard-fought campaign, the measure passed on Nov. 4, 2008, with 52 percent of the vote. (Florida and Arizona also passed bans at the same time.)

Groups who had fought Proposition 8 immediately filed suit to block it. On May 26, 2009, the state Supreme Court upheld the voter-approved ban but also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect would stay wed. But in August 2010, a federal judge in San Francisco struck down the ban, saying it unfairly targeted gay men and women, handing supporters of such unions a temporary victory in a legal battle that seems all but certain to be settled by the Supreme Court.

The judge initially stayed his order, leaving the Proposition 8 ban in effect, then said it would be lifted as of Aug. 18, allowing same-sex marriages to resume.

In January 2011, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, asked the California Supreme Court for guidance on the issue of standing in a federal challenge to Prop 8. The order comes after former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his successor, Gov. Jerry Brown, refused to defend the proposition in court. That has left the defense primarily to conservative legal groups and proponents of the measure.

New York

In December 2009 the New York State Senate voted down a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage. The vote followed more than a year of lobbying by gay rights organizations, who steered close to $1 million into New York legislative races to boost support for the measure.

But in June 2011, the tide turned when four senators who had votedagainst legalizing same-sex marriage reversed course, saying their constituents’ thinking on the socially divisive issue had evolved. Lawmakers voted on June 24 to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed.

The marriage bill, whose fate was uncertain until moments before the vote, was approved 33 to 29 in a packed but hushed Senate chamber. In the end, four members of the Republican majority joined all but one Democrat in the Senate in supporting the measure after an intense and emotional campaign aimed at the handful of lawmakers wrestling with a decision that divided their friends, their constituents and sometimes their own homes.

The unexpected victory had a clear champion: Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat who pledged in 2010 to support same-sex marriage but whose early months in office were dominated by intense battles with lawmakers and some labor unions over spending cuts. Mr. Cuomo made same-sex marriage one of his top priorities for 2011 and deployed his top aide to coordinate the efforts of a half-dozen local gay-rights organizations whose feuding and disorganization had in part been blamed for the defeat two years ago.

The new coalition of same-sex marriage supporters brought in one of Mr. Cuomo’s trusted campaign operatives to supervise a $3 million television and radio campaign aimed at persuading several Republican and Democratic senators to drop their opposition. In New York, passage of the bill reflects rapidly evolving sentiment about same-sex unions. In 2004, according to a Quinnipiac poll, 37 percent of the state’s residents supported allowing same-sex couples to wed. In 2011, 58 percent of them did. Advocates moved aggressively to capitalize on that shift, flooding the district offices of wavering lawmakers with phone calls, e-mails and signed postcards from constituents who favored same-sex marriage, sometimes in bundles that numbered in the thousands.

The law went into effect on June 24, with hundreds of couples marrying within the first hours.

President Obama and Gay Marriage

The flurry of activity in early 2009 has put pressure on President Obama to engage in a variety of gay issues. Mr. Obama has said he opposes same-sex marriage as a Christian but describes himself as a “fierce advocate of equality” for gay men and lesbians. While Mr. Obama has said he is “open to the possibility” that his views on same-sex marriage are misguided, he had offered no signal that he intended to change his position.

In February 2011, Mr. Obama directed the Justice Department to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act against lawsuits challenging it as unconstitutional. The 1996 law barred federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. sent a letter to Congress on Feb. 23 saying that his department will take the position in court that the act should be struck down as a violation of same-sex couples’ rights to equal protection under the law.

The move was welcomed by gay-rights advocates, who had often criticized Mr. Obama for moving too slowly in his first two years in office to address such issues. Coming after the administration successfully pushed late in 2010 for repeal of the military’s ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly, the change of policy on the marriage law could intensify the long-running political and ideological clash over same-sex marriage as the 2012 presidential campaign approaches.

A few years ago, the president’s decision might have set off an intense national debate about gay rights. But the Republicans’ reserved response suggested that Mr. Obama may suffer little political damage as he evolves from what many gay rights leaders saw as a lackluster defender of their causes into a far more aggressive advocate.

The Republican responses reflect a belief that the political focus in the near term will be on fiscal issues rather than social ones. Advocates for gay rights, meanwhile, argue that the political ramifications of the president’s decision should be limited because surveys suggest that, while the country is split on the issue, a growing number of people support gay marriage.

Same-Sex Marriage and Religion

Religious institutions have struggled with policies, privileges and rites regarding homosexuality, including whether or not to bless same-sex unions and whether or not gays and lesbians may hold positions of authority. There is no consensus among Christian faith groups on what the Bible says about homosexuality. Meanwhile, many individuals yearn for acceptance from their houses of worship.

In 2005, The United Church of Christ became the first mainline Christian denomination to support same-sex marriage officially when its general synod passed a resolution affirming “equal marriage rights for couples regardless of gender.” The resolution was adopted in the face of efforts to amend the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

In July 2009, at the 76th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, delegates including bishops, clergy and lay members, voted to open “any ordained ministry” to gay men and lesbians, a move that could effectively undermine a moratorium on ordaining gay bishops that the church passed at its last convention in 2006. Delegates also voted not to stand in the way of dioceses that choose to bless the unions of same-sex couples. Both issues have roiled the church for years.

Methodists, Presbyterians and American Baptist Churches have also debated the issues, and other Christian denominations have struggled with how to minister to gay and lesbian members.

Fundamentalist denominations have made significant efforts against homosexuality. The Southern Baptist Convention, for example, has expelled congregations that welcomed homosexuals to their memberships.

Reform Judaism, the largest of the main branches of Judaism, has for years allowed same-sex commitment ceremonies.

Islam prohibits same-sex marriage.

Demographics on Same-Sex Couples

In late August 2011 the Census Bureau released surprising data on where same-sex couples live in the United States. For example, the list of top cities did not include that traditional gay mecca, San Francisco. In fact, the city, which ranked third in 1990 and 11th in 2000, plummeted to No. 28 in 2010. And West Hollywood, once No. 1, dropped out of the top five.

According to the report, the No. 1-ranked town is Provincetown, Mass., at the tip of Cape Cod. Most surprising is how far same-sex couples have dispersed, moving from traditional enclaves and safe havens into farther-flung areas of the country. For instance, Pleasant Ridge, Mich., a suburb of Detroit; New Hope, Pa.; and Rehoboth Beach, Del., a beach town in southern Delaware, were in the top 10. All three had been popular destinations for gay people locally but had never ranked in the top 10.

The reordering reflects the growing influence of baby boomers, who are beginning to retire, and their life transitions are showing up in the data.

Unless you have an limitless wedding budget or have the backing of a very wealthy family, probabilities are you are attempting to find ways to make your wedding more affordable. The idea of paying a huge sum of cash for the “perfect” wedding dress may be a very hard pill to swallow when you consider all the other expenditures involved in hosting a wedding. Well there is a compromise in the conception of purchasing pre owned wedding dresses for far under what a new dress of comparable value would cost. More and more brides world-wide are realizing that their imagination wedding dresses may fetch them a lot of much necessitated cash and are actively attempting to trade these as pre owned wedding dresses for a very cheap price, far beneath what they in the first place paid. The problem facing numerous brides-to-be is where to look for these great deals on preowned wedding gowns. There are a lot of places to commence searching and this is what we are going to thoroughly question now.

1. Family Ties

The easiest place to get started is merely by talking to prompt and extended family members. Chances are that somebody had a daughter or niece that was not long ago married and may be fascinated in making a good deal of cash selling her dress as a pre owned wedding dress. Naturally you will need to see the wedding dress to determine if you even like the style and check for any harm before making an offer. Don’t be amazed nonetheless if you find that these recent brides may not be too receptive to your inquiries as they may see this as an undertake by you to duplicate their wedding look. Still it never hurts to ask around as you may land an unbelievable deal since it is amongst relatives and not strangers.

2. Social Networking

I’ll be you never thought of using social networks like Facebook and Twitter to help find pre owned wedding dress! Actually this could be one of the best ways of all the ones we are talking about here as you may reach a big audience with your inquiries. Just be sure to distinctly specify what you are looking for, the size and the condition you suppose it to be in, how to view it before hand, and at last how much you are more than willing to remunerate if you determine to buy.

3.Websites Search

Simply going online and typing in keyword such as “pre owned wedding dresses” will concede you to visit a great deal of online web sites that carry applied wedding dresses. Often these web sites are acting as a broker amongst the former brides attempting to trade her wedding dress and the up and coming bride looking to buy a pre owned wedding gown. Since you will be dealing with persons you do not even know or may never see, it is primary to exercise caution before paying for the wedding dress to assure you get what is being advertised.

4 Auction Sites

Auction websites such as E-bay are getting a frequent source for pre owned wedding dresses. Often former brides may get much more for their wedding dresses than expected when a bidding war erupts amid two of more buyers after the same product. Once again you do need to be careful that you only buy from venders with a good reputation on these auction web sites to refrain from being ripped off.

5. Wedding Store Demos

Most wedding stores keep an inventory of sample gowns on hand and are more than willing to trade them off at primarily scaled down prices, particularly when the current styles change. Since these sample or “demo” dresses may have only been tried on within the store for a few minutes by potential customers, these pre owned wedding gowns will be in magnificent condition with very low hours of actual use. Your buy may come with less risks as well since you are dealing with a local business person face to face rather than a total stranger, perchance even in another state, province or country.

Of all the selections listed above, the easiest one to commence with and often times the one which will provide the most selections and best prices, is a search of internet websites dealing with pre owned wedding dresses. All you require is a great deal of time and a working laptop or computer with an Internet link. You don’t even have to depart your home! Merely pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, obtain a comfortable chair and let the “surfing” to begin. You could perchance be enjoyably amazed at what you may find with just a few clicks of a mouse button.

‘It was hard work. It took four solid days of blowing up and twisting the balloons into shape.

‘But I was thrilled with the overall result. My daughter Vicky loves wearing
it, although she won’t wear it outside as she’s terrified that someone
will pop the dress with a pin and leave her embarrassed.’

The wedding dress is just the latest line in Mrs Levett’s crazy balloon
world. She even made a replica pink cadillac car and ‘drove’
it around her home town with a friend.

She said: ‘I made it for someone’s
birthday present. We took it around town and the traffic warden couldn’t
believe his eyes when he saw us coming down the road.

‘We
stopped all the traffic, people were coming out of buildings and
following us up the street. We had quite a crowd watching us.’

Mrs
Levett, who lives with husband Michael, 51, and their other daughter
Natalie, 24, said: ‘I started off 15 years ago by doing some face
painting at a girls school fayre.

‘Then someone suggested I try balloon twisting so I picked up a book on balloon artistry and have never looked back since.
She has also made mobile phones, bicycles, flowers and hats.

Mrs Levett, who works as a balloon
artist, said: ‘I’ve made dresses for both of the girls. I’ve made a blue
skirt and top for Vicky and a black and white balloon dress for
Natalie.

‘They have both worn them out, but they are both very wary of someone sticking a pin into them for a joke.

‘They can last a couple of weeks before the balloons start to go down.’
Vicky,
who works at specsavers, added: ‘The dresses are great. It makes a nice
change from wearing ordinary clothes. Getting into the outfits is a bit
difficult in case any of the balloons pop, but once they are on they
are very comfortable.

‘My friends can’t believe it when they see me wearing mum’s balloon clothes. They love it because its so different.’

Mrs Levett added: ‘Kate’s wedding dress was the ultimate challenge.
I’m
crazy about balloons and love thinking up new things to make. I can
literally make anything out of balloons and I use them for lots of
things. I even use them to tie my runner beans up in my garden instead
of canes.

‘My ambition is to make a dress for Lady Gaga – I think she’d look fabulous dressed in balloons.’

One of the most exciting aspects of wedding planning for a bride is looking for and eventually finding the dream dress. There are many in the industry who would like you to believe that a dream wedding dress has to cost a fortune but more and more future brides are discovering that this is not necessarily the case.

Second-hand or ‘pre-loved’ wedding dresses have always been a great way of saving money and in these worrying times it is this area of the wedding market which is currently experiencing unprecedented growth, with some charity shops creating their own dedicated departments.

Benefits

The advantages of opting for ‘second-hand’ are obvious once you stop to think about it. Not only is there a significant cost saving but you’ll also be helping the environment too.

A little known fact is that many dresses sold as ‘second-hand’ are have actually never been worn. Some manufacturers and retailers regularly dispose of their overstocks through these channels and sometimes brides have been a little optimistic when buying a size too small well in advance of the wedding date. Often they are left with a dress that they cannot wear and have had too long to return – you’d be surprised how often this happens!

Even a dress which has been worn will have been well looked after and professionally cleaned afterwards, so in all respects the term ‘as good as new’ is perfectly valid.

Finding a Used Wedding Dress

Finding the perfect Used wedding dress is not as difficult as it used to be and the internet should be your fist port of call; not necessarily to make a purchase but just because it’s such a great research tool for finding suppliers and getting an idea of what’s available.

Charity shops and vintage clothing outlets are an obvious choice on the High Street, with many shops now having dedicated wedding departments to meet demand.
On-line auctions and specialist websites are also a good idea provided you do your homework first. Have a good look around and only buy from reputable companies and those with a clear returns policy.

Dress Sizing

The biggest problem that people experience is with sizing of dresses. Vintage dresses tend to be undersized for historical reasons and dress imported from abroad tend to use the US sizing system which is generally one size under the UK equivalent.

It’s a good idea therefore to ask plenty of questions especially about where the dress was made and, if buying directly from another bride, did she find the sizing was accurate or were alteration necessary?
Another good idea is to purposefully opt for a size above the one you need. This gives you the option of having the dress altered for a perfect fit nearer the day, and, obviously, a larger dress is easier to take in than a smaller dress is to take out.

Tips to Find a Used Wedding Dress

Use the internet for research and check out all the charity shops and vintage clothes stores in your area;

Charity shops in affluent areas tend to get a better class of stock – so have a day trip out if necessary – it could well be worth your while.

Opt for a size above rather than an a perfect fit – this gives you more options as the wedding day approaches;

Be patient, many stores have a high turn-over of stock and it might be a while before you find the perfect dress?

Look after your dress and consider selling it on afterwards and give another bride the opportunity of wearing it.

Congratulate yourself – not only have you saved a considerable amount of money, you’ve also helped the environment too.

Have a great wedding day!

Your wedding doesn’t have to cost the Earth, shop around and search for budget on www.ResellYourWedding.com
